DO NOT GET A FLAT COATED RETRIEVER IF:
- you are not willing to accept that your flat will carry everything; from toys to your shoes, pillows or anything that "seems interesting to carry"
- you want a dog that will mature at two or three years old
- you don't have time to meet the needs of movement and activities of the flat
- you are not ready for a dog that will happily roll in every puddle it comes across
- you are not prepared (especially during shedding season) to regularly brush and vacuum your flat
- you are allergic to dog hair or the hair bothers you
- you have too little time for the dog or your flat would have to be alone most of the time
- you want a dog that will not only be a pet but also guard your house
GET A FLAT COATED RETRIEVER IF:
- you like elegant dogs
- you like spending time in nature
- you like to go for walks
- if an athlete or sports person
- if you like hiking
- if you live near a river, lake or sea
- you want a dog that will always delight in your company
- you want a dog that will always be there for you selflessly
- you want an extremely intelligent breed
- you want a dog that loves children
- you want a dog that won't bark too much
- you want a dog that is friendly with other dogs, sometimes too friendly
- you want a dog that likes to cuddle and snuggle up in bed
- you want a dog that will happily bring you various objects
- are you prepared to vacuum frequently because of hair?
- you are ready for regular combing
EVERY RULE HAS ITS EXCEPTIONS...
As the title itself says, the above is generally true... BUT there are always exceptions. The Flat Coated retriever is a dog bred to retrieve feathered game from the water, but over the years its function as a retriever has almost been lost. They still fetch balls, dummies, sticks, frisbees... But don't be surprised if your dog decides to bring you a neighbor's chicken or a pigeon found in the park. Breeders have to pass a test of natural traits with their dogs so that the dogs can be bred. The main discipline of this exam is the retrieving of wild game while still being shot. Some breeders go a step further, preparing their dogs for a demanding work test in bringing, which, in addition to innate qualities, requires a considerable amount of time, work and effort to master certain disciplines. Parents pass their genetics on to puppies so that even though your puppy is a city dog, trained to walk on a leash, commands, he can turn into an avid hunter in an instant because it's written in his genes!! There is nothing more beautiful than to see a flat-haired retriever running at full speed and with great passion towards the fetch, buy it and return to its owner at the same speed. There is nothing more beautiful than when a Flat Coated retriever tirelessly retrieves an object from the water, returning it to its owner and asking for "more".
